Intellectual property rights are certain privileges associated with creations of the mind. Intellectual property includes protections for creators of inventions, computer code, literature, art, and more. In most countries, the creator of a creative work is usually given the exclusive right to reproduce and modify the work.

Many virtual worlds allow users to buy, sell, and create their own objects, but it is often unclear how many rights the user has. Some virtual worlds believe that because they run the servers, they own everything that is on those servers. Others give users the intellectual property rights to reproduce content they upload.
